The Oklahoma Auto Accident Lawyers at Atkins & Markoff Alert Public to Bill in State Legislature That Would Allow Police to Pull Drivers Over For Lacking Auto Insurance
Wednesday, February 15th, 2012Oklahoma City, OK (PRWEB) February 08, 2012
The Oklahoma auto accident attorneys at Atkins & Markoff, a law firm comprised of Oklahoma personal injury lawyers who dedicate their legal practice to serving clients who have been wrongfully harmed in Oklahoma car accidents, hereby alert the public of the introduction of a bill in the Oklahoma legislature that would provide police officers with the ability to pull over drivers who do not have adequate insurance coverage.
The bill, which is known as HB2525, would provide police officers with the ability to check vehicles via a state-run database in order to determine if the driver is carrying adequate auto insurance. If the driver does not have a proper level of insurance, the officer could pull the motorist over and issue a citation. The driver could be fined up to $ 250, they could have their vehicles towed and impounded and they could have their driving privileges suspended until they pay the fine and provide law enforcement with proof of insurance coverage.
The bill was introduced by Representative Steve Martin, and it was offered in response to the statistic that shows that approximately 20 percent of all drivers in Oklahoma do not have adequate insurance coverage. When someone is injured in an Oklahoma car accident and the at-fault driver does not have adequate coverage, it leaves few options for the recovery of damages.
It is hoped that if this bill passes that more motorists in Oklahoma would obtain auto insurance coverage, and it would also allow those who have been injured in Oklahoma auto accidents to pursue a recovery of damages from the at-fault driver?s coverage as opposed to attempting to recover compensation from that driver?s own uninsured/under-insured motorist coverage.
