OAI: Indiana Auto Insurance Bill Would Help Identify Uninsured Drivers

Saturday, January 21st, 2012

Indianapolis, Indiana (PRWEB) January 17, 2012

A bill being considered by Indiana lawmakers that would require insurers to notify state transportation officials when they cancel private auto policies could make it more difficult for residents to skirt the state?s mandatory coverage requirements, according to Online Auto Insurance (OAI).

The proposed legislation should be of interest to Hoosier State residents who are having difficulty keeping up with payments on their policies or are planning on buying a no down payment auto insurance policy in order to register a vehicle and then canceling it once registration is in place.

Like most states, Indiana requires that motorists purchase a minimum amount of liability insurance to pay for any damages they may cause behind the wheel. State law mandates that drivers carry enough coverage to pay for up to $ 25,000 in bodily injury to one person, as much as $ 50,000 per accident and up to $ 10,000 in property damage.

Source: http://www.in.gov/idoi/2579.htm#6

A bill currently before a state Senate committee would require that insurers send cancellation notices within 10 business days to policyholders whose coverage is being cut off and to the state Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

The recipients of these notices would then have 20 days to inform the bureau of how they intend to satisfy the state?s financial responsibility requirements going forward.

State officials would be allowed to suspend the vehicle registrations of drivers who get such notices and do not respond to the bureau within 20 days.

With the economy still sluggish, many people have had a hard time keeping up with monthly premiums. But OAI points out that, while payments can be expensive, the cost of flouting state coverage requirements can be far greater.

OAI advises consumers in Indiana and other states to make sure they have coverage in place before they get behind the wheel.

Online Auto Insurance: AAA Report Should Have Holiday Travelers on the Alert

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

Houston, Texas (PRWEB) December 19, 2011

AAA recently announced that it?s predicting nearly 92 million Americans will set out on road trips over 50 miles to get to year-end holiday destinations this year, a fact that should prompt drivers to show extra caution while on the road, according to Online Auto Insurance.

The tens of millions of people that will be taking to the road between Dec. 23 and Jan. 2 is likely to mean increased congestion and heightened chances of getting into an accident. And in addition to the possibility of injury, accidents likely mean those involved will see less affordable options when they go to run they compare car insurance quotes online.

According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, December and January saw the highest monthly volumes and rates of crashes in 2009.

That year, there were 525,000 crashes in December and 539,000 in January. Those numbers are 14 percent and 18 percent higher than the average for all months that year.

When comparing the monthly rates of accidents per mile driven, December and January also easily surpass the average for all months. According to the data, the rate of accidents per million miles driven was 17 percent above average in December and 29 percent above average in January.

In addition to the increase in traffic volumes, another likely contributor to the high crash rates during the holidays is the dangerous road conditions that are caused by winter weather. Drivers should take the time to make sure that they and their cars are ready for adverse weather conditions before heading out to grandma?s house.

According to AAA, the 91.9 million drivers expected to hit the road for year-end holiday travel represents a 1.4 percent increase from last year.

Insurance Lawyer Offers Free Seminar to Educate Insurance Brokers about Filing Disability Insurance Claims

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

Sacramento, CA (PRWEB) December 05, 2011

Eric Ratinoff, an insurance lawyer and partner at Sacramento personal injury law firm Kershaw, Cutter & Ratinoff, LLP, will host a free seminar for insurance brokers and their clients next month. The class aims to equip insurance brokers and policyholders with information that will help them prepare claims in the event of a career ending disability.

“The last thing a person needs to hear when facing a life altering illness is that their insurance claim was denied,” states Eric Ratinoff, “and the first person they will turn to is the one who sold them the policy.”

While insurance brokers may see insurance from the front end sales perspective, Ratinoff takes a behind the scenes look. His one-hour class will discuss the documents needed to file a successful claim, what total disability means in terms of “own occupation” vs. “any occupation,” the insurance company’s legal obligations, as well as their defenses to coverage, and what to do if the insurance company refuses to pay the claim in whole or in part.

“All too often insurance companies enhance the bottom line by charging policyholders large premiums while rejecting valid claims,” he adds. “But the insurance company absolutely is not allowed to put profits over people. It’s people over profits – and it’s too bad that they need to be reminded of this time and time again.”

The class is eligible for one hour of continuing education credit from the California Department of Insurance. It is free, but space is limited. Those interested in attending are encouraged to RSVP by calling Taryn Smith at 916.448.9800, or emailing tsmith(at)kcrlegal(dot)com.

Kershaw, Cutter & Ratinoff represents injured plaintiffs in automobile and motorcycle accidents, traumatic brain injuries, defective products, dangerous drugs & medical devices, as well as insurance bad faith matters. Founding partner Eric Ratinoff has successfully tried and settled numerous cases on behalf of his clients, earning large recoveries in cases involving disability, health, auto, property, long term care, business, fire & casualty, commercial and life insurance policies. Mr. Ratinoff is AV Rated through Martindale Hubbell (its highest rating). He has also been named a Northern California Super Lawyer for 2010 and 2011.

Focusing on the educational advantages that accompany bilingual literacy, the event gave families an opportunity to bond and learn more about important educational initiatives available in their community.

Infinity joined Step Up For Students as a corporate partner in 2011 and will contribute $ 1 million to fund more than 242 scholarships for low-income Florida children. In addition to their financial investment in the scholarship program, Infinity Insurance offered the Nov. 15th event to students from La Progresiva, a school that participates in the Step Up For Students Scholarship Program, as an interactive way to support reading in bilingual families.

More than 110 elementary students and their families gathered at the school to share a family-style dinner and learn more about Step Up For Students and Infinity?s Read Conmigo, a parent-focused program supporting bilingual literacy. Read Conmigo provides parents with tools to improve their families? reading habits and foster a lifelong love of reading. The program also delivers bilingual children?s books free to families, encouraging the importance of parents reading to and with their children.

Event attendees heard an inspiring personal story from a Step Up For Students scholarship parent and enjoyed a family-bonding story time that featured bilingual picture books from the Read Conmigo program. As families sat together with their own Read Conmigo books, La Progresiva teachers modeled how to read with children and encouraged parents to engage in family reading on a daily basis. Free books and school supplies were given to the families courtesy of Infinity Insurance and Read Conmigo.

Before the families gathered to hear a story read to them in both English and Spanish, Infinity Insurance presented the pledge of $ 1 million to Step Up For Students, which provides kindergarten-12th grade scholarships to underprivileged students in Florida. ?Through this innovative program, we are able to help Florida families choose the best learning environment for their children, an option that they would otherwise not be able to afford,? said Geraldine Villoch, Florida Divisional Manager for Infinity Insurance.

Step Up For Students is a nonprofit organization that administers Florida Tax Credit Scholarships to students so that low-income Florida families can choose a school that may better fit their child?s learning needs. Students that qualify may receive more than $ 4,000 towards private school tuition or a $ 500 scholarship to help with transportation costs of attending another public school in a different county. Statewide, 36,000 children are receiving scholarships this year, including more than 8,000 in Miami-Dade County alone.

?We are honored to have Infinity Insurance as a contributor to the program,? said Step Up For Students President Doug Tuthill. ?Because of their generosity and commitment to Florida?s low-income youth, 242 more children will have equal opportunities in their education. Corporate partners like Infinity Insurance are helping to positively shape the futures of these children every day.? Since 2002, corporations like Infinity have contributed more than $ 900 million to Step Up For Students. Through this program, also known at the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship Program, corporations are able to help fund kindergarten-12th grade scholarships, and receive a dollar-for-dollar tax credit for the amount they redirect.????
